Harris vs Trump, and the battle for the future
Four years ago, I wrote a post titled “Biden vs Trump, and the battle for the soul of the nation”. Biden prevailed, and America and the world got out of the pandemic of the century, not totally unscathed, but at least alive and kicking. The four years after that were difficult, with painful inflation, sky-high interest rates, a land war in Europe, and a conflict in the Middle East. Now, four years on, we are on the cusp of another US election, and although things have not settled down yet, how they will settle down, and what else will stir up, depends very much on who will steer America in the next four years, for the directions are very much different between the candidates.
To be brutally honest, I don’t know why Trump can still be here. As an MSNBC reporter just mentioned, in other countries, if a politician says or does just one of those things that he has said or done, he or she would have been finished. But not for Trump. Despite being a felon, a racist, a sexist, and a fascist, Trump is still in the closest fight ever for the presidency. That really speaks something about Americans, and how deeply conservative, nationalist, and partisan they can be. Some of them are willing to vote for any…
